Accident
Just came back from hospital. A close family of mine (to simplify things, say she's my aunty) was hit by a motorcycle as she was crossing the road. Received 12 stiches on her forehead and suffered broken right arm. Might require an extensive operation to fix her right arm, but her old age (about 60-65 y.o.) presents a risky and dangerous condition.
Full story:
It was 8pm. She had looked both ways and started to cross the street using a street light to prevent her from getting hit. However, a motorcycle either without its light turned on or broken lights (ie. both are very common here in Indonesia) came out of nowhere. The driver had seen my aunty as she started to cross the street and tried to brake hard without success.
The driver was held by the people around the scene and was released because my aunty forgave him. The driver wanted to pay for the medical expenses but my aunty only asked that he cover the charges for the transport to my house (ie. equal to about AUD$1).
I wonder whether the driver knows that my aunty's medical expenses can actually cost at least AUD$1,500 if she has to undergo an operation (excluding hospital treatments). Emergency Room (ER) treatment & x-ray scan cost AUD$50 plus hospital room @ AUD$50 per day.
By the way, there's not much effect for a health insurance like the ones in Australia since it's still much cheaper to pay the medical expenses at the point of need rather than paying for an insurance policy.
